Background

A primary school with some 200 children, Dedworth Green First School was one of the first schools in the Windsor area to implement the Government's 'extended services' policy.

In collaboration with five other schools in the 'Dedworth Cluster' the school will offer a range of community services alongside the more traditional primary school activities. These will include a children's centre, breakfast and after-school clubs, various training courses for parents, and a conference room for use by local businesses and community groups.

In order to implement the new extended services, the cluster needed to refurbish Dedworth Green First School's dilapidated school hall.

Karen O'Dwyer, Extended Schools Services Worker with the Cluster, had no experience of managing refurbishment projects, so she asked Newbury Interiors to bid for the work, on the strength of their ability to provide a fully project-managed service, from design through dilapidation and installation to final finishing.

Scope of works

  • Present and agree designs to fit budget
  • Strip out and clear existing fittings
  • Strip and refurbish existing parquet flooring
  • Install suspended ceiling
  • Install lighting
  • Install new windows and blinds
  • Install conference room partition wall and door
  • Install plumbing, heating and air conditioning
  • Upgrade alarm system and integrate with rest of building
  • Provide furniture
  • Build computer stations and coffee point in lobby
  • Build conference room emergency exit
  • Decorate throughout

Critical issues

Pupils' safety and well-being are of course the school's first priorities, so it was a basic requirement that the works be completed without putting the children at risk. In particular, the old windows were to be removed and all debris cleared during the half-term break, to avoid any danger of the children being exposed to broken glass.

What the client said

"Newbury Interiors were great to work with," said Karen. "They met every deadline and kept me up to date throughout the project. I found them easy to contact with queries and quality of work and value for money are both excellent."

"Of all the workmen we've ever had, Newbury Interiors are by far the best," added Helen Fisher, Head Teacher at the school.
