Smallbone of Devizes is a specialist bespoke furniture manufacturer operating to exceedingly high standards. The company has built its excellent reputation on premium quality products and highly personalised service. Established some 30 years ago, Smallbone employs around 200 people across 11 showrooms in the UK, and two in the US.

In late 2006, the company decided to refurbish part of the kitchen showrooms suite at its Devizes head office. Having implemented a 'no smoking' policy across the site in 2006, the work was to include redeployment of the now redundant smoking area as additional cafeteria space and a staff kitchen.

Smallbone selected Newbury Interiors to handle the refurbishment work via an informal tendering process involving three interior specialists.

Scope of works

• Present and agree designs
• Remove existing smoking area walls
• Build new walls, redeploying smoking area
• Remove existing suspended ceiling
• Install new ceiling and spot lights
• Install electrics
• Install disabled washroom
• Build staff kitchen area

Critical issues

While the work progressed, the showroom suite remained open to customers: it was vital that the refurbishment was undertaken with minimal noise, mess and disruption, and that it was completed as swiftly as possible.

Smallbone staff were to handle certain aspects of the refurbishment, such as decoration and flooring, so the work needed to be scheduled so as to proceed swiftly but without the two teams obstructing one another.
