Case Studies West Berks Turnhams

Head office Office
Premises: Turnhams Green office, Calcot, near Reading Scope: Principal contractor for new two storey office refurbishment Project duration: 8 weeks

Background

West Berkshire District Council recognised the need for a new office base in the east of the West Berkshire region.  The new Turnhams Green Office would bring the Children and Young People Eastern Locality team, and Older People’s Services together under one roof. It also needed to fulfil the office design and flexibility required by ‘Timelord’.  Timelord is West Berkshire Council’s mobile and flexible working programme to introduce ‘smart working’ environment and practices and make better use of time, space and technology.

As a preferred supplier, West Berkshire Council brought in Newbury Interiors to be the principal contractor for the two storey office refurbishment at Calcot, near Reading and to manage all aspects of the office refurbishment.

Scope of works

  • Raised access floors and carpet lifted to accommodate new power and data and all reinstated
  • Some ceilings removed for air conditioning
  • New offices and meeting rooms built on both floors, including operable/movable wall
  • Communications room
  • Silicon glazed interview rooms
  • Tea point and break out area
  • Alterations to reception including forming opening for fire-rated security shutter
  • Decoration throughout to new partitions and existing walls
  • New fire alarm and intruder system including CCTV
  • Fully structured cabled in CAT 5e for data

Critical issues

As principal contractor, Newbury Interiors needed a good knowledge and background of the job in order to keep the project on schedule, within budget and meet the Council’s deadlines. In addition, Newbury Interiors was required to ensure the work was fully compliant with legislative and health & safety regulations.

What the client said

Pat Noble, Facilities Operations Manager, West Berkshire District Council, said:

“West Berkshire Council was very pleased with the refurbishment work that Newbury Interiors carried out at Turnhams Green.  Furthermore, it was handled in a professional and sympathetic manner, and in accordance with legislation and health & safety rules.”
