Welcome! ...to New Interiors, the bi-monthly email newsletter from Newbury Interiors.

As usual, we keep you updated with new products that help to create unique work environments, and showcase Lumicor translucent resin panels that have a variety of uses.

Our next article looks at working at height. The biggest cause of workplace deaths is falls from a height and there are a number of measures the construction sector can take to manage the risk according to the HSE.

Newbury Interiors strives to work to the best industry standards including health and safety. As a result, we are pleased to announce our registration on Constructionline, the DTI endorsed register of pre-qualified construction suppliers. Find out more about Constructionline in our article.

Finally, with the summer holidays now upon us, we take a look at the implications for employers when company equipment is taken away on holiday.

New Interiors comes to you without charge or obligation. If you like it, please tell your colleagues so they can receive it too. Details on how to subscribe and unsubscribe are at the end of each issue.

Wishing you every success,

Chris Chamberlain

Lumicor decorative panels: Beauty and functionality combined

Lumicor decorative panels

For something a little bit architecturally different for your office, take a look at Lumicor decorative panels, new from Muraspec. The panels are made from a translucent resin which encapsulates interesting materials such as natural foliage, metals, textiles, paper, wood veneers, organic materials and glass, thereby producing an unusual creative effect. They can then be cut for use in a variety of applications including cabinet/door inserts, room dividers, countertops, furniture, lighting and showers.

Working at height

Working at height

Official HSE figures show that falls from height remain the single biggest cause of workplace deaths accounting for 46 fatalities and 3,350 serious injuries in 2005/6 alone. However back in February this year spot checks by HSE inspectors in Aberdeen closed down 10 sites due to 'bad and dangerous' working practices that were 'accidents waiting to happen'.

Whilst it is not practical to stop working at height, employers can take a measured approach and manage it effectively to protect their workforce. HM principal inspector of health and safety, Jim Skilling, said: "Our advice to those who work in the refurbishment sector is to plan work, use competent workers and if working at height, use the right equipment and use it safely." For further information about Working at Height Regulations (WAHR 2005) see http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg401.pdf.

Relaxing holiday?

Relaxing holiday

Sun cream...check. Sun hat...check. Mobile phone...check. A recent survey suggested that over 80% of workers will be taking their mobile phone away with them on holiday this summer.

There is a cautionary note however. Employers must face up to the fact that due to their employees' diligence, or paranoia for that matter, they could be putting the company at risk if any of these devices is lost or stolen, and is unsecured. Necessary steps should therefore be taken to protect the company's data - wherever it travels.
