Welcome! ...to New Interiors, the bi-monthly email newsletter from Newbury Interiors.

In these recessionary times "every little helps" (to borrow a phrase from a well known supermarket retailer). When it comes to reducing overheads, cutting electricity costs is one way of doing this. The Fluorosave device featured in this issue may help you do just this.

Businesses can also benefit financially from more efficient health and safety practices as outlined in the second article.

Also featured in this issue is the work Newbury Interiors completed for The English Provender Co. following a phase of expansion.

Finally we take a look at an innovative meeting chair from Elite that converts to a table in seconds.

New Interiors comes to without charge or obligation. If you like it, please tell your colleagues so they can receive it too. Details on how to subscribe and unsubscribe are at the end of each issue.

Wishing you every success,

Chris Chamberlain
Managing Director

Cut energy bills and your carbon footprint

Cut energy bills and your carbon footprint

When you're refurbishing your office it's an ideal time to assess the energy efficiency of your workplace.  Voltage optimisation (setting voltage to a lower level to the average UK voltage of 242 V) can help you cut your electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions at the same time.  This does not affect efficiency as all electrical equipment supplied in Europe is calibrated to operate at 230v +/-10%.

For example, power consumption of fluorescent lighting can be reduced by up to 30% by installing a voltage optimisation unit such as Ecoadapt's Fluoresave.  Keith Berry, director at Ecoadapt explains:  "When lighting typically accounts for 20-30% of a company's total energy bill, Fluoresave can reduce these costs immediately."  Voltage reduction devices are also available for a complete electrical installation.

Making health & safety pay

Making health & safety pay

It's a fact.  Your business will benefit financially if you establish more efficient safety practices.  The HSE explains how you can achieve this in their latest publication - Making Health and Safety Pay.  By using case studies the guidance shows how health and safety improvements can bring substantial cost savings by reducing:-

  • Minor accidents
  • Downtime
  • Long-term illness
  • Absenteeism
  • Reported injuries
  • Insurance claims and premiums

The St Regis Paper Company, for example, saved £100,000 a year for the past five years by reducing days lost to absenteeism, accident investigation and downtime.  This was achieved through improved safety training, fitting machinery guards, appointing safety representatives and working with the HSE and trade union.
