Welcome! ...to New Interiors, the bi-monthly email newsletter from Newbury Interiors.

As the year once again draws to a close, the UK has had to endure its toughest recession since the 1950s. Whilst there's optimism for a recovery in 2010, quite how long and painful this may be is being debated.

Reflecting on 2009, Newbury Interiors has seen an increasing choice of ‘greener' office products to improve sustainability and reduce carbon footprint, the introduction of the Environmental Liability Directive as well as the first year of the new Environmental Performance Certificate. As we look towards 2010 our first article discusses the issue of the ageing office community and how office design is adapting to the needs of older workers.

We also take a look at an innovative new clock with a wipe-down surface and ‘eraser' hands and we feature the work Newbury Interiors completed for independent opticians, Eyesite following their shop move.

Finally, we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year with some tips from us on how to be an office Scrooge!

Wishing you every success,

Chris Chamberlain
Managing Director

The Welcoming Workplace Project

The Welcoming Workplace Project

Did you know that by 2020, one in two adults in the EU will be over 50? It seems that ageing is finally on the design agenda, with workplaces having to adapt to the different needs of older workers in future.

The Royal Academy of Art's Helen Hamlyn Centre recently concluded a study that addresses how office environments might be rethought to allow increasing numbers of older people to participate in the knowledge economy. Although their study examined the needs of older people in the workplace, they found that their results could be applied to all office workers regardless of age.  Click here to find out more about this study: http://www.welcomingworkplace.com/index.html

No excuse for procrastination!

No excuse for procrastination!

This very simple but ingenious clock called "Trace of Time" by Il-Gu Cha is an eraser equipped timepiece made primarily of glass. Notes and messages can be written on the clock with whiteboard pen. As these deadlines pass, the clock hands wipe away those tasks. Perfect for those of us in the office who are born procrastinators, although not for those of us with short term memories and a habit of being late! Eye-catching fit out for opticians

Eye-catching fit out for opticians

When independent opticians, Eyesite decided to relocate their premises in Reading, they asked Newbury Commercial Interiors to design and build the shop-fit for their new practice to offer a more practical layout for their clients. The in-house design service offered by Newbury Interiors was important to the client, as was the ability to complete the entire project within seven weeks.
