Hotelling v's Hot Desking - the evolving workplace
A hot buzz word for 2008 may well become Hotelling. We are all getting used to hot desking - where demand for space in an office means that workers, who only come into the office from time to time, share the use of desk areas when they are in. They simply 'turn up and plug in' to a free desk - hoping that one is free for them to use.
Hotelling allows workers to reserve desk space and other essential resources in advance, so they can minimise any disruption and just hit the ground running when they arrive at the office. For example being able to reserve space near a particular department or reserving a network cable, conference phone or high speed printer may be important.
There are now also software solutions, which can help companies, their remote employees and office based colleagues manage flexible seating facilities - helping to save money through excess office space and maximising work efficiency.
