EPC - a legal requirement

Since October 2008 EPCs, or Energy Performance Certifcates, have been required when a building is sold, rented out or constructed, and sometimes after refurbishment work. The EPC certificate, which is provided by an accredited energy assessor, gives a building an A to G rating so that potential buyers or tenants can look at energy efficiency as part of their purchasing or occupying decision. Sellers or landlords who fail to produce an EPC risk a £5,000 fine. The Carbon Trust offers practical advice and information to businesses on improving as well as grants available.
