Welcome! ...to New Interiors, the monthly email newsletter from Newbury Interiors.

We like to bring you the hottest news issues and this month is no exception. We demonstrate how looking at your supply chain needs to form part of your effort to reduce your carbon footprint. We also focus on tackling obesity through the workplace and look at what employers can do to address the issue with their workforce.

We outline a project carried out for Premier Leasing and Finance, a Berkshire based company, who had an issue with sound proofing their offices and required an innovative solution.

And we feature a design classic and icon of the last century, the Anglepoise lamp, which has recently celebrated its 70th birthday and is still just as popular as ever!

New Interiors comes to you without charge or obligation. If you like it, please tell your colleagues so they can receive it too. Details on how to subscribe and unsubscribe are at the end of each issue.

Wishing you every success,

Chris Chamberlain

Soundproofing solved for Premier Leasing

ceiling

When Premier Leasing and Finance Limited, of Thatcham, Berkshire, had an issue with the sound proofing of their Directors’ offices, it was a big concern for client confidentiality and staff privacy. They called in Newbury Interiors who designed an innovative solution to resolve the situation, which was caused by the shape and height of the ceiling in their offices.

Newbury Interiors planned a phased approach to the project to minimise disruption and noise to the busy office as they undertook work; creating floor to ceiling partitions, refurbishing and furnishing the offices to match the clients new branding.

An iconic poise

Anglepoise lamp

An iconic design symbol of the 20th century, the Anglepoise lamp evokes images of generations of workers desks illuminated by the single bulb of this simple metal and spring structured lamp.

The Anglepoise lamp was created over 70 years ago and is still made by the same family firm that started production in the 1930s. Little has changed in its basic design since this time, but the range now extends from desk lights, to floor lights, pendant lights, specialist magnifier lamps and even giant floor lamps. And still serves the same important purpose in the workplace.

The ultimate in sustainable products, the Anglepoise website features spares and rewiring kits for all of their out of production models – even for the original Anglepoise 1227 which was originally manufactured between 1936 and 1938.

From Factory to Fit Out, reducing your carbon footprint

Smokey Chimney Stack

Reducing carbon footprint is the priority of many companies, but just how does that focus flow down through your supply chain? How far have the products that your suppliers use travelled from source to factory? Are your suppliers focused on sourcing local, sustainable materials?

The manufacturers of one the key components that Newbury Interiors use is leading this drive to reduce the ‘Factory to Fit Out’ miles that their products travel. Lafarge plasterboard has just opened a £35m plant in Ferrybridge Bristol, which will increase their UK manufacturing capacity by 50%, greatly reducing their reliance on imported plasterboard.

Additionally, the new plant is sited alongside the Ferrybridge C Powerstation which will supply Lafarge with sustainable gypsum, a key component of plasterboard, reducing the need to import natural gypsum and recycling up to 200,000 tonnes a year of a by-product which would otherwise be dumped in landfill. An ecologically sound solution for all.

Obesity in the workplace

Scales

The debate on the growing national obesity issue has moved into the workplace; so what can employers do to tackle the issue with their employees?

No legislation is planned and employers are under no obligation to be responsible for the size of their workforce. Also a careful approach needs to be taken to avoid claims of discrimination from aggrieved employees, or those with underlying medical conditions.

There are, however, softer ways to address the problem for employers who are concerned about the health and wellbeing of their workforce. Supporting team sporting activities, encouraging walking or cycling to work and providing facilities such as changing rooms, lockers and showers are all proactive ways an employer can encourage employees to lead a more healthy lifestyle.

The debate continues on www.Workplacelaw.net.
