Welcome! ...to New Interiors, the monthly email newsletter from Newbury Interiors.

Innovative, creative and avant-garde are some of the words used to describe the ideas that featured at 100% Design, the leading contemporary interior design exhibition, that took place in London last month; here we show you a couple of exciting and daring designs.

400million tonnes of solid material is used by the UK Construction industry every year, but one third of it goes to waste, often ending up in landfill or being flytipped. We highlight the work that Defra is doing to drive down waste and increase recycling, with the backing of the industry.

Following the first UK Older People's Day, we reveal how employers will benefit from the UK's steadily aging workforce.

Finally, one year on from the new legislation changes, we remind you of your responsibilities for fire risk assessment at your premises; act now and stay safe.

New Interiors comes to you without charge or obligation. If you like it, please tell your colleagues so they can receive it too. Details on how to subscribe and unsubscribe are at the end of each issue.

Wishing you every success,

Chris Chamberlain
Managing Director

GenerationXperience

GenerationXperience - Our Aging Workforce

The first national UK Older People's Day was held on 1st October 2007. With the number of workers aged 65-70 in the UK set to treble to three million by 2017, this day of awareness aims to challenge negative stereotypes of aging to help shift society's attitudes towards older people. And new research reveals that older workers are found to be more reliable than their younger counterparts and have a vast wealth of work and life experience to offer an employer and pass on to younger colleagues.

The implications of this for employers are wide ranging, from the anti-age discrimination laws that were introduced late in 2006, to adapting working patterns to allow older employees to work more flexibly through part time roles or job sharing.

Waste matters

Reducing waste really does matter to the UK construction industry, which has endorsed proposals by Defra to significantly reduce the 109million tonnes of waste produced by the industry each year; waste which either ends up in landfill or gets flytipped.

The Government has welcomed the level of support for the idea of legally binding Site Waste Management Plans which aim to reduce illegal waste disposal and improve efficiency through recycling and reuse of construction materials.

However, in the consultation responses, the industry did stress the need for enforcement, publicity and training, and the need for support for small businesses when the regulations are introduced in 2008.
